The Stein, a rocky outcrop above the Klus, was the site of a noble residence as early as the 11th century. It was later acquired by the Kyburgers and then the Habsburgs, who used it as a seat of administration and archive. The Stein was besieged and destroyed in 1415, but rebuilt between 1658 and 1670, only to be finally demolished in 1712.
