During the Escalade of 1602, a pétardier named Picot attempted to blow up the Porte de Neuve, but his plan was foiled by Isaac Mercier, a Lorrain soldier who lowered the portcullis, preventing Picot from applying his explosive device. Picot was later killed in the battle, not by the falling portcullis as legend has it, but by a gunshot wound to the head.
