On September 10, 1898, Empress Elisabeth of Austria, also known as Sissi, was assassinated on the quai du Mont-Blanc by an Italian anarchist named Luccheni. She was mistaken for a target and stabbed, and despite initially thinking she was only injured, she died shortly after. A statue now stands at the site of the incident.
