The Wilde Mann gasthof was hit by the plague in the 1560s, claiming the life of the innkeeper's wife, Frau Karger. Her father, Hans Rudolf Fäsch, was a goldsmith who later became the Landvogt of Waldenburg and was even knighted by Emperor Ferdinand I. The Wilde Mann also suffered a devastating fire in 1720, which prompted professors from the nearby university to rescue valuable manuscripts from the burning building.
