After a devastating fire in 1405, the city of Bern allowed neighboring farmers to sell their onions once a year as a token of gratitude for their help in extinguishing the flames. This tradition is still celebrated today in the form of the Zibelemärit. Onions are sold in braided form and the festivities include a confetti battle and folkloric performances.
