On the square of the Tilleuls in Altdorf, a pole was erected with the hat of Hermann Gessler, the imperial bailiff, and the inhabitants were forced to bow to it. Guillaume Tell, the legendary hero, refused to do so and was subsequently condemned to shoot an apple off his son's head with a crossbow.
