John Ruskin, an English poet and artist, took the first-ever photograph of the Matterhorn in 1849, which was a daguerreotype of poor quality but a remarkable document nonetheless. He was just 30 years old at the time and had been visiting Zermatt since 1833. The photograph was a culmination of his fascination with the mountain, which he had grown to love over the years.
