A nearly complete mammoth skeleton, estimated to be around 34,000 years old, was discovered in Niederweningen in 2003. This remarkable find led to the establishment of the Mammutmuseum in 2005. The skeleton was found in the same layer of peat where mammoth bones were first discovered in 1890 by railway workers.
